Building Homes That Support Life

As our communities grow and evolve, one thing remains constant: every resident deserves the ability to live safely and independently in their own home. This May, Prosperity North Carolina highlights our work in Aging-in-Place and Accessibility through our Operation Give & Save initiative, which empowers elderly and disabled residents across Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Operation Give & Save: Transforming Homes, Transforming Lives

Many older adults and people with disabilities face barriers in their homes that threaten safety and independence. From narrow doorways to unsafe staircases, these obstacles can lead to falls, injuries, or even the need to leave a beloved home.

Through Operation Give & Save, PNC provides home modifications such as:

  • Grab bars and handrails for bathrooms and stairways

  • Wheelchair ramps and widened doorways

  • Improved lighting and non-slip flooring

  • Accessible kitchen and living spaces

These modifications don’t just prevent accidents they restore autonomy and dignity, allowing residents to age safely in the home they love.

Case Studies: Independence in Action

  • In Durham County, a 72-year-old resident received a full home modification, including a wheelchair-accessible bathroom and stair lift. Today, they maintain their independence and continue volunteering in their community.

  • In Orange County, modifications to an older adult’s kitchen and living areas have allowed them to host family gatherings safely, keeping social connections strong.

  • In Chatham County, PNC assisted a veteran with mobility challenges by installing ramps and safety equipment, dramatically improving quality of life and reducing hospital visits.

These stories highlight how small structural changes can yield life-changing results for elderly and disabled residents.

Housing, Health, and Community Infrastructure

Safe, accessible housing is a cornerstone of public health. When homes are modified to meet residents’ needs:

  • The risk of injury and hospitalization decreases.

  • Families experience reduced stress and increased stability.

  • Communities benefit from residents who remain active, engaged, and connected.

PNC works at the intersection of housing, health, and community infrastructure to ensure that aging-in-place is not a privilege, but a right for all residents.

Get Involved

You can help make aging-in-place a reality for more residents:

  • Volunteer with Operation Give & Save to assist in home modifications.

  • Donate or fund projects that provide accessibility upgrades for low-income residents.

  • Advocate for local policies that support inclusive, safe housing for older adults and people with disabilities.
