This June, Prosperity North Carolina shines a spotlight on our Veterans at Home initiative, part of Operation Give & Save, which provides home repairs and accessibility modifications for veterans and their families. Our mission is simple: those who served our country deserve homes that are safe, accessible, and supportive of independent living.

Veterans at Home: Making a Difference

Many veterans face housing challenges that jeopardize their safety and independence. Veterans at Home addresses these challenges by:

  • Installing ramps, handrails, and stair lifts for mobility support

  • Repairing roofs, plumbing, and electrical systems to ensure safe living conditions

  • Modifying kitchens and bathrooms for accessibility

  • Offering guidance on navigating VA benefits and housing assistance programs

By combining practical home improvements with resources and advocacy, the program ensures veterans can thrive in the communities they call home.

Success Stories from Our Communities

  • In Durham County, a veteran who had difficulty navigating stairs now has a stair lift and accessible entryway, allowing them to live safely without relying on family or neighbors.

  • In Orange County, a veteran family received home repairs to fix unsafe wiring and improve bathroom accessibility, significantly reducing health risks.

  • In Chatham County, a veteran with mobility challenges had their entire home modified, including widened doorways and grab bars, enabling them to regain independence and host family gatherings.

These stories illustrate how home modifications do more than improve safety—they restore dignity, independence, and quality of life.

Resources & Advocacy for Veterans

Prosperity North Carolina also connects veterans with:

  • VA housing assistance programs and guidance for applying for grants and benefits

As our communities grow and evolve, one thing remains constant: every resident deserves the ability to live safely and independently in their own home. This May, Prosperity North Carolina highlights our work in Aging-in-Place and Accessibility through our Operation Give & Save initiative, which empowers elderly and disabled residents across Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Operation Give & Save: Transforming Homes, Transforming Lives

Many older adults and people with disabilities face barriers in their homes that threaten safety and independence. From narrow doorways to unsafe staircases, these obstacles can lead to falls, injuries, or even the need to leave a beloved home.

Through Operation Give & Save, PNC provides home modifications such as:

  • Grab bars and handrails for bathrooms and stairways

  • Wheelchair ramps and widened doorways

  • Improved lighting and non-slip flooring

  • Accessible kitchen and living spaces

These modifications don’t just prevent accidents they restore autonomy and dignity, allowing residents to age safely in the home they love.

Case Studies: Independence in Action

  • In Durham County, a 72-year-old resident received a full home modification, including a wheelchair-accessible bathroom and stair lift. Today, they maintain their independence and continue volunteering in their community.

  • In Orange County, modifications to an older adult’s kitchen and living areas have allowed them to host family gatherings safely, keeping social connections strong.

  • In Chatham County, PNC assisted a veteran with mobility challenges by installing ramps and safety equipment, dramatically improving quality of life and reducing hospital visits.

These stories highlight how small structural changes can yield life-changing results for elderly and disabled residents.

Housing, Health, and Community Infrastructure

Safe, accessible housing is a cornerstone of public health. When homes are modified to meet residents’ needs:

  • The risk of injury and hospitalization decreases.

  • Families experience reduced stress and increased stability.

  • Communities benefit from residents who remain active, engaged, and connected.

PNC works at the intersection of housing, health, and community infrastructure to ensure that aging-in-place is not a privilege, but a right for all residents.

Get Involved

You can help make aging-in-place a reality for more residents:

  • Volunteer with Operation Give & Save to assist in home modifications.

  • Donate or fund projects that provide accessibility upgrades for low-income residents.

  • Advocate for local policies that support inclusive, safe housing for older adults and people with disabilities.

As we approach the 2025 municipal elections, Prosperity North Carolina is launching a voter empowerment series to ensure that every resident especially those in rural and immigrant communities has the tools, resources, and confidence to participate fully in democracy. Early voting begins in August, and now is the time to engage, educate, and empower.

Why Voter Engagement Matters

Local elections shape the policies that directly affect our communities: housing, education, public safety, healthcare, and economic opportunity. Yet, too many residents in rural North Carolina face barriers to participation, from long travel distances to polling sites, confusing registration processes, and language obstacles.

Prosperity NC believes that no one should be silenced because of where they live, their background, or their documentation status. Civic participation is a cornerstone of community power, and our voter empowerment initiatives aim to break down every barrier.

Spotlight: Rural Immigrant Communities

Immigrant residents often face additional hurdles:

  • Language barriers that make understanding ballots or election materials difficult.

  • Misinformation or fear about eligibility, particularly among undocumented or recently naturalized citizens.

  • Limited access to civic resources in smaller towns or rural counties.

Through partnerships with organizations like the Chatham County Hispanic Coalition and local civic groups, PNC is offering workshops, multilingual materials, and one-on-one support to ensure these residents know their rights and can make their voices heard.

Our Voter Empowerment Series

Starting this April, PNC will roll out a series of resources and programming designed to maximize participation ahead of the elections:

  • Community Workshops: Learn how to register, check voting status, and navigate early voting and election day procedures.

  • Multilingual Guides: Easy-to-read materials available in Spanish and other commonly spoken languages in rural NC communities.

  • Virtual Q&A Sessions: Residents can ask questions and get guidance from civic engagement experts and local organizers.

Get Involved

Every vote counts, and every voice matters. Prosperity NC encourages residents to:

  • Register or update voter information early.

  • Attend local workshops or virtual Q&A sessions.

  • Spread the word in your community about the importance of participation.

Looking Forward

By centering equity and inclusion in civic participation, Prosperity North Carolina ensures that rural communities and immigrant populations can influence the decisions that shape their lives. This April, we recommit to empowering every voter, protecting access, and building stronger communities through engagement.
